Phuket Fantasea: “Carp-al” Tunnel Syndrome

October 7th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Thailand Photography and Photos

"Carp-al" Tunnel Syndrome

These fish obviously aren’t carp (koi). But I thought I could attempt a clever play (or moderately clever) on the term for the medical problem of carpal tunnel syndrome.

This particular photo was taken without using any software to create the focal zoom effect. I did it the old-fashioned way, which included dropping the shutter speed down  & manually zooming the lenss back & forth to create the blurring movement The only editing I really did  after the fact was with Picnik, which included using the “auto fix” feature & then dropping the exposure down a little & boosting the contrast up slightly.

Looking for an easy way to spot some great photoblogs?

October 7th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Photoblogging Resources, Photography

While an earlier blog post of mine covered some very basic things to promote your photoblog, which may also help you find some photographers to follow, I was a little frustrated that I wasn’t able to have something like Techmeme make it easy for me to scan a ton of headlines quickly. Then I remembered a site called Alltop, a site I didn’t use before too often, simply typed in http://photography.alltop.com to see what would be returned in the site results, and was pleasantly surprised to see a ton of interesting photographers with articles of interest (some of them I’ve even interacted with sparingly on Twitter).

Since I am an amateur, with no interest in going pro, some of the material probably wouldn’t be directly relevant to me in many ways (reviews of every new camera, for example) . But I am always interested in material related to making me take better pictures, and I think I’ve found an easy solution to getting some additional tips from pros in the fields of photography I enjoy doing as a hobby (nature, cultural, landscape)

Komodo Dragon: Singapore Zoo

October 6th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Wildlife Photography and Photos, Zoo Photography and Photos

Komodo dragon at the Singapore Zoo

Looks like they found that the origin of Komodo Dragons has been found to be Australia, not Indonesia as many may have thought.

I remember reading a Douglas Adams’ book called Last Chance to See, in which he claimed that the Komodo Dragon had the worst breath that would probably kill you.

Jaguar: Chiang Mai Zoo

October 6th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Big Cat Photographs and Photos, Jaguar Photos, Leopard Photos, Wildlife Photography and Photos, Zoo Photography and Photos

Jaguar

This picture of a Jaguar was modified using Picnik from this original here. As you can see from the original, the glass of the cage put some strange aberrations in the photo that couldn’t be easily corrected with any of the tools I had at my disposal (I don’t use Photoshop because I haven’t had the time to really learn it). I used Picnik to change the color to black & white, played around with the contrast a little bit, and then went for a focal zoom effect on Picnik to create some “movement” in the picture.

Resources for selling your photographs online

October 6th, 2009 by Damon | 1 Comment | Filed in Photoblogging Resources, Photography, Photography Resources, Selling Photos or Prints Online

While I am not a professional photographer, nor do I try to make a living selling photography at this time, I do hope this list helps people interested in this  arena locate some of the more popular and reputable online services (the ones mentioned are the ones I’ve seen photographers mention the most in a variety of forums and social networks).

Some popular services to sell your photographs online:

DeviantArt
Etsy (more of an arts & crafts community)
Flickr (Flickr largely has partners where you can get work done; most of the photogs I’ve talked to sell their prints on one-off occassions)
Fotomoto
Imagekind
Shutterfly
SmugMug
ZenFolio

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1. While these services will help you display your images, you will largely be responsible for promoting your work
(this will take marketing on your end). I have some quick tips for promoting your photoblog, for example, but this isn’t the only thing you could do and/or should be doing.
2. Some of these services do charge you to host your photos (subscription fees).

3. Some of these services will only charge you if an order is actually placed (varies by company for costs…but you can generally expect somewhere close to 15% of the total sale price).

4. Many of these services, if not all, will handle the fulfillment process for you (shipping, printing, etc.)

5. All of these services may not offer what you need if you are an event or wedding photographer, such as password-protected galleries and the like,  so you might want to look at services like Instaproofs.

Reality check:
1. Many photographers, even serious professionals, will tell you that selling prints online is not an easy
thing to do. As mentioned above in the paragraph above, it takes a fair amount of marketing to get your name and images out there.

2. Selling photographs online should be viewed as a passive form of income for most.

3. Set reasonable prices for your work. Fields like nature and wildlife photography are very saturated with many images from pros and amateurs alike, so  you would really only want to charge a great deal if your images are very unique.

4. You may have to sell across multiple channels to sell images, inlcuding using more than one of the online services mentioned above.

Stock photography:

Since this is not even remotely close to an area of  familiarity or expertise of mine, I am not going to cover this arena at all.  This article on selling photos online with stock agencies should give you some leads.

Female Lioness: San Francisco Zoo

October 5th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Big Cat Photographs and Photos, Lion Photos, Wildlife Photography and Photos, Zoo Photography and Photos

Female Lioness San Francisco Zoo

Out of all of the animals in the animal kingdom, I have a special place in my heart for all members of the Big Cat family. Lions are interesting to me because they’re more of a social group than other members of the cat family, something that is fairly unusual (Tigers, for example, are pretty much solitary animals once they mature).

Phuket: Fantasea Show

October 4th, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Phuket, Thailand Photography and Photos

Fantasea, Phuket Thailand

Fantasea is one of the better tourist attractions to see while vacationing in Phuket (see a fire long-exposure picture from a previous entry). If you’re looking for another tourist attraction besides Fantasea, the Simon Cabaret is another one of the shows you should see while in Phuket.

The nice thing about Fantasea is that you can have a picture taken with a baby tiger (yes, I realize that there are bad things about this practice as well).

Hill Tribe Girl Outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand

October 3rd, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Thailand Photography and Photos

Thailand Hill Tribe, Chiang Mai (Long Neck Paduang)

This little girl was so shy at first (she loosened up after we gave her a snack).. I guess I could understand being on public display all day long for the entertainment of tourists, when a little kid actually probably just wants to play.

From a purely cultural perspective, the Chiang Mai region of Thailand is probably going to be the more “real version” of what Thailand is (or was) historically. If you’re looking for cultural attractions and a very relaxed atmosphere, I would personally recommend Chiang Mai over areas like Phuket or Pattaya. First-time visitors to Thailand should make the following itinerary to get the most out of their first trip:

Bangkok-Chiang Mai-Phuket (I am recommending Phuket because of the world-class beaches & a very modern infrastructure, not to mention easy access to places like Krabi and Koh Phi Phi).

More information about the various hill tribes can be found here.

Hollywood: Hollywood Walk of Fame (Michael Jackson)

Hollywood: Hollywood Walk of Fame (Michael Jackson)

This picture was taken about two months ago in Hollywood, CA. As this was shortly after Michael Jackson’s death, there were tons of mourners taking pictures and placing stuff around his star.

Buddha: Sukhothai, Thailand

October 1st, 2009 by Damon | No Comments | Filed in Thailand Photography and Photos

sukhothai, thailand

Sukhothai, while not quite having the scenic splendor of  the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia , is one of my favorite places I’ve been to in Thailand. Getting around to the many temples is at least a full-day affair, and I could definitely spend more time there taking pictures.
